Local Information

Established in 1728, Caroline County’s seat is Bowling Green and is known for its historic areas such as Port Royal. The county sits on 537 square miles of land in addition to about nine square miles of water. Its water comes from its northern boundary of the Rappahannock River. The river helps the soil and the agriculture in the area providing a great base for the slightly acidic soil composition. From Alpacas to Zucchini and everything in between, there is much to grow and raise in Caroline County!

Agriculture is a mainstay of Caroline County and it holds multiple Farmers Markets as well as the ever-popular Virginia State Fair. Caroline County is steeped in equestrian history and was the birthplace of Thoroughbred horse racing in North America as well as one of America’s most famous horses, Secretariat, Triple Crown Winner in 1973.
